    • Beijing, China

The China Overseas Exchange Association (COEA), an international cultural exchange program based in Beijing, China, is offering adoptees from China (aged 10 -18) and their immediate family members a free* (see below for expenses that are and are not covered) tour of Beijing from July 6-11. I think this is an amazing opportunity for those members that want to take advantage.

Free* China Heritage Tour of Beijing for FCCNY Members

Open to all Chinese Adoptees aged 10-18 and Immediate Family Members

Wednesday 5 July to Monday 10 July 2017 (six days and five nights)

Families with Children from China Heritage Tours are a part of the China Overseas Exchange Association (COEA), an international cultural exchange program based in Beijing, China. The COEA is generously offering a special experience - a free* 5-day tour of Beijing - to children adopted from China (aged 10 – 18) and their immediate family members.

The COEA has great respect for the generosity and kindness of the American parents who have welcomed a Chinese child into their families. In appreciation, the COEA is very pleased to be able to offer both its financial support and its sponsorship to this exciting China Heritage Tour Program. This wonderful educational and cultural opportunity helps our adopted children develop friendships and enhance their understanding of their heritage. The goal is to give them an opportunity to appreciate and develop pride in their Chinese roots and to encourage a meaningful cultural exchange.

Perhaps the most important benefit of the China Heritage Tours is the priceless sense of value and pride that the children receive from being a part of this experience. Not only has the land of their birth not forgotten them, but it is actively working to bring them and their families back to visit and to enable them to experience first-hand the incredible culture, history and beauty of their birth country.

China Heritage Tours are carefully planned by the COEA with the assistance of professional Chinese travel agencies and tour guides to reach a fine balance between active and leisure time, history, culture and entertainment. All tours are planned with the children as both the most important part of the program and as the very reason for it to exist at all.

    What’s Free*

    • Accommodations in Four or Five Star Hotels for the days of the tour (July 6-11)
    • Three meals a day for the days of the tour (except for the last day which includes breakfast only)

Birth Family Search: How Crazy is This Going to Get?

Birth Family, First Family, Original Family.

All terms commonly used for the people who are connected to our children through blood relation. And though we may imagine that our tweens and teens may want to search “someday” for these connections, the truth is that every adoptive family today should be proactively making choices about searching NOW.

Open records, DNA testing, family tree websites, social media, Google, orphanage searches by other families, even a birth relative doing a reverse search to find information on your child; all can lead quite quickly to an unscheduled and unprepared for, reunion.

The question is no longer IF your child will one day (sooner rather than later) be able to locate a birth relative, but when. For most domestic adoptees, it is now just a matter of time. For international adoptees, the search is becoming easier and easier.

This webinar will share the realities of birth family search today and provide tips and tools to make informed choices...

    About Martha Osborne:

Martha Osborne is the founder and Executive Director of the RainbowKids Adoption & Child Welfare website.  Over several decades of advocacy for vulnerable children and orphans, her focus on finding real-world solutions to the growing issue of children living out their childhoods in group homes, foster-care, and orphanages has led to Child Advocacy Model implementation and the collaboration of local, state, and global organizations.

This work has brought together national and international advocacy groups who share the belief that children need to grow up in families. Recognizing that there are no one-size-fits all solutions for children living outside of family care, this network uses various methods to bring hope to children, including strengthening the original (birth) family, providing sponsorships for education and medical needs, advocating for adoption, training care-takers, and educating families.

Martha is an adoptee, and mother to five children who entered her family through adoption at various ages and from difficult beginnings.  With time, love, dedication, therapies, prayer, and a few bumps and struggles along the way, those five children have grown into vibrant young people and adults.

    Holt Adoptee Camp

              1. Groupings:

                       A Campers: 9-10 year olds

                       B Campers: 11-12 year olds

                       C Campers: 13-15 year olds

                       D Campers: 16-17 year olds

              2. Programming

The scheduling and programming will remain the same for Groups A, B, and C; however, the D Campers will have a revised program that is tailored to their maturity level, and will include the following:

                       a. Excursion Day: 16-17 year old campers will get to go on an off-site excursion that will provide a fun opportunity to be within their community, while bonding and building self-confidence outside of the camp setting. Before and after the excursion, we will hold a space for discussion where expectations, thoughts, and concerns can be talked about openly.

                       b. Day Camp: We believe that adoptee voices hold a lot of value, and it is a huge way in which adoptive parents learn, as well as where a lot of young adoptees may gain confidence. Group D campers will participate in Day Camp in which both adoptive parents and young adoptees will interact with this older demographic of adoptees through informational and fun activities.

                       c. Buddy Program: Group D campers will also have a “little buddy” – this is a 9-10 year old camper that is partnered with a 16-17 year old during certain activities to build bonds and comfort for the younger campers.

                       d. Transitioning: This is an underlying focus that will encompass the Group D program. We believe that the adoptee community is a lifelong connection, but we also realize that this is a unique space that is hard to recreate as adoptees get older and transition into new roles (college student, working professional, etc.). This focus will allow adoptees to address Transition in an open and supportive environment.

Meet the Camp Director: Katelyn Marks

I wanted to introduce myself – hello! My name is Katelyn. A quick overview about myself:

    •       Adopted from Korea when I was 9 months old in 1990

    •       Raised in Oregon

    •       I have a B.A. in Philosophy

    •       Did a year of AmeriCorps in Nebraska

    •       I have over 2 years of experience in child care (a year while living in Germany)

    •       I have worked at Holt International as the Social Services Assistant for over 2 years

    •       Currently going to school to get my Masters in Social Work

The above bullet points paint a quick picture of me, but what I hope to exemplify and bring to Holt’s camp program is something more, and it’s something that I was missing while growing up. I didn’t have a connection to adoptee camps when I was a kid, or adoptees, and I didn’t even know about the adoptee community until I started working at Holt. As I was becoming immersed into this community, I realized that I had stumbled upon something I never knew I was missing. The adoptee community is something I strongly believe in. It’s unique, multi-faceted, and lifelong. As your Camp Director, community will be the foundation – and that means communities of adoptees and also adoptive parents, because there is significance within both. I look forward to getting to know you all, and for another great year – thank you!

contact Katelyn Marks at katelynm@holtinternational.org, or call 541-687-2202 ext. 111.
