2016 OCA National Convention

Thursday, July 21

Over the last 15 years, OCA has provided more than 1,000 college students with the opportunity to share awareness raising experiences, mobilize around Asian American issues and campaigns, work with the community, and discover the ever changing role of Asian American students in multi-ethnic settings. OCA’s College Day is a full day of workshops, centering on issues affecting APA college students. Highlights include workshops and discussion groups on media, education, activism and politics, and career choices.

This event is free for FCC YA members to attend and includes breakfast and lunch.

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM | Joint MFHA Showcase of the Stars

Multicultural Foodservice & Hospitality Alliance (MFHA) Showcase is a live, in-person career exploration event focusing on students of color including high school and college. Showcase informs participants from diverse communities about the tremendous career opportunities that exist in the food and hospitality industry by showcasing successful professionals from all segments of the industry.

10:35 PM - 12:00 PM | APA History 101

Dive into a discussion on APA history through a hands-on APA historic timeline activity which involves small group discussions and presentations. The interactive activity will help students develop knowledge about APA issues, strengthen APA awareness on campus with students, staff and faculty members, create networks and meet other APAs in the region, and become more empowered in their communities.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | Lunch (free to students)

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM | Ballin' on a Budget

Too often, the greatest goals and ambitions are never achieved because young people run into a financial roadblock. Become an expert driver of your success and avoid the pitfalls of a poorly managed financial plan by learning through a situation based activity, with prizes for the top performing team!

3:05 PM- 5:00 PM | Power and Privilege: Understanding a New Way Forward

Society is subject to many power and privilege disparities that wield the potential to be beneficial or harmful to the world. Participate in an interactive activity about how power and privilege can affect society’s well-being and discuss how you can positively influence change within the system as you further your career.
